Reinstate Jenny and Damien

UNISON member Jenny Markey was summarily dismissed last week by the University of Bolton over an allegation that she brought the University into disrepute.

At Jenny’s disciplinary hearing, the University presented no evidence and she was dismissed without a chance to prepare a defence.  Jenny’s husband Damien, a lecturer and the local UCU branch secretary, had been dismissed the previous week in similar circumstances.

The University has faced criticism in the media over the financial affairs of the vice-chancellor George Holmes.

UNISON North West Regional Secretary Kevan Nelson said:

“The University has treated Jenny very unfairly and they have not followed the normal procedure.  We will be supporting Jenny through the appeal process.

“We are alarmed that the University of Bolton has taken this arbitrary and vindictive decision and we will be challenging this by all available means including legal action.”
